A Face in Me, an exhibition by Judas Companion
For her first solo show in the UK, Judas Companion – artist Jasmin Reif – will present a series of knitted mask pieces.
A Face in Me is a new body of work that explores the concept of a mask through sculpture, photography and film. In creating her masks, Judas Companion uses various techniques - including sewing, crochet, embroidery, sculpting and taping – and materials - disposable pieces of fabric, wool, fur, leather, plastic and paper; materials which are mostly donated, found or collected. She creates every single element featured in the artworks, from making the masks and the costume, to the set design, lighting, styling and, finally, the photography.
As Judas Companion, the artist aims to make her work accessible to audiences through humour and surrealism, deliberately incorporating jokes and naivety in order to touch upon topics that are both personal and emotional. She works on sets without heating and lit by candlelight to emulate the environments of ‘Old Masters’ paintings and, with dresses sewn from found paper & plastic bags she explores working with disposable materials in order to make sense of all waste produced by human beings and herself.
In all of her work, Judas Companion explores metamorphosis of human identities - creating characters by making masks and wearable pieces that confuse the wearer’s identity, all photographed in individual settings that are essential to the representation of each character.
Born 1984 in Germany, Judas Companion graduated in 2012 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Duesseldorf and in 2014 from Central Saint Martins, London. The artist works in London and is currently in residence at Sarabande Foundation. Nominated for the Villa Massimo Scholarship 2018, her work has been on display in various shows, including the RA London, CCA Glasgow, ICA London and Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin.
