Thai Ladyboyz in the club
Henrique Bento is a Portuguese photographer and filmmaker obsessed by what he calls “porn poetry”. His work is an attempt to express “the war between body and soul”. So when in 1998 he went to Phuket on holiday of course he was mesmerized by the Ladyboys.
Even though Ladyboys, also known as Kathoey, are accepted as a “third sex” in Thailand, Henrique looked at them and thought they were women. But then again, “only men could achieve this kind of glamourous hysteria”.
Their femininity and cared for appearance aroused his interest so he took their picture making sure he captured a glimpse of the bars and nightclubs where they worked.
Not every Ladyboy is a sex worker, but a lot of them are. Plastic surgery boomed in Thailand during the late Nineties and the Ladyboys worked long hours to get the money they needed to change their bodies.
